Lehigh Valley Stymied by Penkwitz
|
The Syracuse Mets shut out the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, 4-0, behind the strong pitching of Bob Penkwitz. Penkwitz surrendered only 8 hits in recording the complete-game victory, and struck out 6.
Following the last out, Penkwitz appeared to celebrate a little too boisterously for Lehigh Valley manager Aaron Sutton, who could be seen scolding the famously outspoken right-hander as the clubs left the field. Penkwitz's own manager then intervened with some words for his counterpart.
The IronPigs skipper would not comment on the exchange but, at the Mets press conference, Penkwitz confirmed that it was regarding the celebration.
"He basically told me I was being a lousy winner," Penkwitz said.
"And I told him he was being a lousy loser," Syracuse manager Brian Dinkelman added.
This year, Penkwitz has fashioned a 12-11 mark, 3.53 ERA and pitched 191.1 innings. Opposing clubs are batting .283 against him and he has logged 140 strikeouts.
