Barons Rally to Win
|
The Birmingham Barons withstood an impressive performance by Springfield second baseman Tim Herron to defeat the Cardinals, 6-4, at Hammons Field. Herron went 4 for 4 with a home run and 3 singles. Birmingham reliever Willie Rangel picked up the win, raising his record to 3-2. Willie Lucio was tagged with the loss. The win gives Birmingham a season record of 39-39.
Birmingham won the game in part because of Danny Ferlise. The center fielder ripped a 2-run home run in the top of the ninth inning to put the Barons ahead, 6-4. For the game, Ferlise had 1 double and 1 home run in 4 at-bats.
Birmingham manager was pleased with the team's effort. "It was just a good, gutsy performance by everybody," he said.
