Marlins Down Reds, 5-3
|
The Miami Marlins faced a tough opponent in Cincinnati pitcher Tommy Peterson, but did just enough to pull out the victory at Great American Ball Park by a final score of 5-3 in 12 innings. Peterson went 6 innings and allowed 1 run. Miami reliever Pete Prescott picked up the win, raising his record to 1-0. Joe Campbell was tagged with the loss. The Marlins raised their record to 5-6.
A defensive lapse proved costly in the contest. In the top of the 12th, with the game tied, Mat Hayes was at the plate when Miami scored 1 on an error. The miscue enabled the Marlins to go in front, 4-3.
"Baseball is such a beautiful game," said Hayes. "Anything can happen on any night, and that's why you don't dwell on what happened yesterday. Just look forward and trust you're going to have positive results."
