The St. Louis Cardinals needed 12 innings to beat the Minnesota Twins, 5-4, at Busch Stadium. The win was due in part to second baseman Bobby Guier, who slugged 2 home runs. He drove in 4 runs and scored twice. Randy Rijos earned the win after being summoned from the bullpen. The right-hander allowed no runs on no hits in 1.1 innings. He upped his record to 4-7. The third-place Cardinals now sit at 48-61.

The decisive blow was delivered by Joe Nelson in the bottom of the 12th when he hit a solo home run off 27-year old left-handed pitcher Willie Barcenas to win the game for St. Louis. The home crowd went nuts.

"Sometimes winning takes more than 27 outs," said Cardinals manager Ryan Nawrocki.
