Pirates Lose 6-1 Decision to Washington
|
The Washington Nationals took on the Pittsburgh Pirates at Nationals Park.
The Washington Nationals topped the Pittsburgh Pirates, 6-1, in National League action at Nationals Park. The game was highlighted by the performance of Washington pitcher Ron Phelps. Phelps, now 5-6, was the winner. In 6.1 innings, he gave up 6 hits, while striking out 5, walking 1, and allowing 1 run.
The Pirates had been locked in a 0-0 tie with the Nationals going into the bottom of the fourth inning. That changed quickly when the 32-year old shortstop Curt Titus came to the plate. Titus hit a 3-run home run on a first pitch changeup from Pittsburgh hurler Sean Tomaszewski. It was Titus's 3rd home run of the year.
"I made some pitches when I had to," said Phelps.
Washington's record now stands at 27-41, placing them 4th in the National League East Division.
