The South Bend Cubs downed the Great Lakes Loons, 12-0. The hitting star was catcher Jon Valdez. Valdez went 2 for 3 with a home run and 2 walks, while adding 4 RBI and scoring once for the Cubs. South Bend pitcher Jerry Lawless earned the win, hiking his record to 1-3. Eric Gaudio suffered the loss. South Bend now owns a record of 24-18.

With South Bend leading 4-0 in the bottom of the fifth, Valdez came up to bat against Great Lakes pitcher Andy Companioni. Valdez hit a splitter to right-center for a grand slam home run. His 3rd home run of the season put the Cubs on top, 8-0.
