Chiefs Score Late, Upend LumberKings, 6-4
|
A nice crowd turned out for a clash between the Peoria Chiefs and Clinton LumberKings.
The Clinton LumberKings could not turn a fine performance from pitcher Kevin Faulkner into a win. Instead, the Peoria Chiefs prevailed, 6-4. Faulkner threw 6.0 innings of 4-hit ball. Daxton Spaulding came out of the bullpen to earn the win. The left-hander allowed no runs on no hits in 2.2 innings. His record now stands at 1-0. Picking up the save was 19-year old right-handed pitcher Jerry Gonzales.
Peoria used the timely hitting of Manny Diaz to seize the win. The right fielder stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the eighth inning to put the Chiefs on top, 6-4. It was his only hit in 3 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.
"Like I've always said, I'm the straw that stirs the drink," Diaz said (again).
"Lousy" describes the Clinton performance in the early going.
