Cardinals Handle Pirates, 5-1
|
The St. Louis Cardinals picked up a win at Busch Stadium, knocking off the Pittsburgh Pirates, 5-1. On the mound for St. Louis was right-hander Dan Andrews. He played a key role in the triumph. The winner was Andrews. He threw 8.1 innings of 7-hit ball. The loser was Sherten Gasser. The Cardinals sit in 4th place in the National League Central Division with a record of 30-29.
Bobby Guier had a big grand slam home run for the Cardinals in the bottom of the third inning. With St. Louis leading 1-0 and the bases loaded, he got a fastball from Sherten Gasser, who finished 3rd in the NL in strikeouts with 210 in 2053, and swatted a home run to right. It was his 13th home run of the season, and more importantly, it put the Cardinals ahead, 5-0.
"We had a good game plan," Andrews said, "and we were able to execute it."
