Nationals Whack Brewers, 11-1
|
The Washington Nationals handed the Milwaukee Brewers a sound defeat, 11-1, at Nationals Park. Mike Culton, who led the NL in wins above replacement with 7.3 in 2052, was a main contributor to the win. He was 4 for 5 with a home run, a double, and 2 singles. He scored 2 runs and drove in 3 for Washington. Ron Phelps, the winner, improved to 2-3. He held Milwaukee to no runs on 1 hit over 6 innings, while racking up 6 strikeouts. Joe Sullivan earned the save, his 8th.
With Washington leading 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth, Culton hit a run-scoring single off Milwaukee hurler Darryl Watlington. It was the 28th hit of the season for Culton and put his team ahead, 2-0.
"It's always fun to score a lot of runs," said Culton.
Washington sits at 16-15 in the early going.
