Cornell Shines in 4-0 Gem
Saturday, August 7th , 1897
The Phoenix Gila Monsters ran into a buzzsaw at Tucson Grounds today as Tucson Highwaymen starter Nazir Cornell cut them down to size, 4-0, tossing a 4-hit shutout.
"That's one thing that has never changed in this game -- pitching can control hitting," Highwaymen manager Juan Vences told reporters after the game. "Nazir knows exactly what he's doing. He's not going to throw you a good pitch until you make him throw one."
In the complete game whitewash, the Tucson hurler doled out 1 walk and registered 14 strikeouts.
On the year Cornell has compiled a 23-15 mark with a 1.68 ERA.
