Tabacaleros Victorious at Guantanamo, 3-1
|
In a low-scoring contest between the Trinidad Tabacaleros and the Guantanamo Cocoteros, Noé Valerio, who led the TORI in strikeouts with 142 in 1902, proved to be the difference. The Trinidad right-hander earned props for his performance in the 3-1 Tabacaleros win. Valerio, now 5-4, was the winner. In 9 innings, he gave up 8 hits, while striking out 7, walking 1, and allowing 1 run. Trinidad has won 3 straight, while Guantanamo has lost 3 in a row.
Trinidad used the timely hitting of Esdras Vásquez to capture the win. The first baseman stroked a run-scoring double in the top of the eighth inning to put the Tabacaleros on top, 3-1. It was his only hit in 2 at-bats, but he made it count.
"I tell our guys all the time, 'Every pitch is the right pitch if you put it in the right place, you believe in it and have conviction,'" Trinidad manager Lisandro Herrera said.
