Philadelphia beat Washington on the strength of starting pitcher Brent Mattern's fine effort. The right-hander led his team to a win, 8-3. The third-place Phillies now have a record of 43-35.

Philadelphia right fielder Elmer Flick made an impact. He drilled a 2-run triple in the bottom of the fifth. For the game, Flick went 3 for 4 with a triple and a double. He drove in 2 runs and scored once.

"Main thing is I want the team to win," Mattern told a reporter after the game. "Just have to go out there, take care of my job, and give my team a chance to win."
