Graham Touches All the Bases, Hits for Cycle
Sunday, May 23rd , 2004
Pete Graham was jubilant as the New Orleans Zephyrs left the field with a win, 13-4, over the Salt Lake Stingers. He had every right to be.
The 26-year-old left fielder hit for the cycle at Franklin Covey Field, had a 4-for-4 game and added 1 RBI and 3 runs to boot.
"It's too bad I can't do that every day," Graham said with a smile to reporters after the game. "It would do wonders for my batting average."
New Orleans manager Gary Matthews was "proud" of the left fielder's feat, but was not expecting it to happen.
"Cycles are tough because triples are tough," the skipper said. "As soon as the ball left the bat on that triple, guys were jumping off the bench for him. Honestly, I wasn't sure he was going to be able to leg it out."
Pete Graham doubled in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, hit a solo-shot off Jake Peavy in the 5th, tripled in the 7th and walked in the 9th.
This season, Graham is batting .288 with 9 RBIs, 11 runs scored and 4 home runs.
