Cartagena Hurls Tacoma to Shutout Victory
The Portland Beavers had no answer for Tacoma Rainiers pitcher Ruben Cartagena. They failed to score a single run against him, losing, 4-0. Portland managed only 1 hit off Cartagena, who had 10 strikeouts.

The extraordinarily popular Cartagena got a standing ovation from the hometown crowd as he left the field, the applause continuing until he returned from the dugout to tip his cap to the crowd.

"Rainiers fans are the best fans, in my opinion," he said. "It's a great feeling to throw a shutout under any circumstances, but to do it with the crowd behind you like that is just incredible."

Cartagena has gone 5-4 this season with an ERA of 4.98 and 54 strikeouts in 59.2 innings pitched. Other clubs are hitting .266 against him.
