Baltimore College Lose, 4-0, to Night Train, Averill
Wednesday, April 14th , 1909
Harley Averill led the Madison College Night Train to a 4-0 shutout victory over the Baltimore College Spectres at Baltimore College Stadium today.
"My pitching coach told me before the game just to bear down and focus," Averill recalled later. "He said no one was going to hit me if I'm throwing a good breaking ball with good location."
Averill yielded 3 hits and had 5 strikeouts and no walks in the standout performance.
"I thought he put the ball where he wanted to," Baltimore College manager John Boatwright said. "And that's just about the whole secret to pitching."
On his stats sheet for the year Averill shows a 7-3 record, 11 starts, 98 innings, 66 strikeouts and a 1.01 ERA.
