Reds Get One to Win
Thursday, April 5th , 1917
Luke Hewson of the Appalachia Academy Reds was on top of his game.
The 15-year-old tantalized the New York Academy Blacks with crisp curves and changeups, mixed in with just enough fastballs to keep the batters honest, shutting them out, 1-0.
"He had the changeup working," New York Academy manager Emery Williams said in postgame comments. "You knew it was coming and you still grounded out -- and then he threw it even slower."
The Appalachia Academy hurler had 3 strikeouts, gave up no walks and surrendered 5 hits in his complete-game effort.
Hewson told reporters after the game that "keeping the ball down is the key to being successful in this league."
"If you don't do that, they'll make you pay," he said.
On his stats sheet this season, Hewson shows a 5-0 record, 7 starts, 52 innings, 13 strikeouts and a 0.69 ERA.
