New York Academy Takes Academy Division Series in Deciding Game
Wednesday, May 22nd , 1918
Members of the New York Academy Blacks couldn't hold back their emotions after beating the Great Lakes Academy Whites in the final game of the Academy Division Series.
"It's just been such a roller coaster," said Blacks starting pitcher Claude Cox after the club's 2-1 win. "You play all season and then everything comes down to this one game. We know how easily we could have been on the other side of it."
The other side was a subdued Whites clubhouse, where players packed up their belongings and headed home for the year, with a somber mood in the air.
For the series, Cox was named MVP, as he had a 1.01 ERA over 26.2 innings pitched. He added 14 strikeouts and picked up 2 wins.
The New York Academy Blacks will play against the Pacific Academy Whites in the next round. Pacific Academy won their series against the Desert West Academy Whites 3 games to 1. The Academy League Championship Series schedule will be announced after the Academy Division Series finishes.
