Hanford Selected SL2's #1 Player Wednesday, June 7th , 1916 Merrill Hanford of the Appalachia Academy Reds had a fine season this year and today he accepted the Academy Champion Award for 1916. The 18-year-old second baseman put up a .358 average and a .396 on-base percentage, piling up 81 hits, 7 doubles, 9 triples, no home runs, 17 RBIs and 26 runs scored. He received 15 first place votes out of a possible 16. John Foster of the Tidewater Academy Blacks finished second in voting with 1 first place vote, while Paul Bucknell of the Appalachia Academy Reds finished third.
