Jones Hurls Shutout
|
The Savannah Goobers shut out the Birmingham Black Magic, 1-0, behind the strong pitching of Archie Jones. Jones surrendered only 6 hits in recording the complete-game victory, and struck out 0.
Following the last out, Jones appeared to celebrate a little too boisterously for Birmingham manager Emmett Tompkins, who could be seen scolding the famously outspoken right-hander as the clubs left the field. Jones's own manager then intervened with some words for his counterpart.
The Black Magic skipper would not comment on the exchange but, at the Goobers press conference, Jones confirmed that it was regarding the celebration.
"He basically told me I was being a lousy winner," Jones said.
"And I told him he was being a lousy loser," Savannah manager Willie Gatewood added.
Jones has fashioned a 11-12 mark for the season, 2.83 ERA and thrown 207 innings in 26 starts. Opposing clubs are batting .251 against him.
