Though he had a stellar game, Bill Sheppard could not prevent his team, the Chattanooga Nickajacks, from losing, 8-5, to the Richmond Black Rifles. Sheppard went 4-5 with a double and 3 singles, while adding 3 RBI. Fred Ross, the winning pitcher, improved to 7-6. He pitched 9 innings, giving up 12 hits and 5 runs, while striking out 1 and walking 1. The loss makes Chattanooga 30-37.

George Miles had a big bases-clearing triple for the Black Rifles in the top of the fourth inning. With Richmond leading 4-2 and the bases loaded, he got a fastball from 24-year old right-handed pitcher Henry Passon and swatted a triple to right-center. It was his 6th triple of the season, and more importantly, it put the Black Rifles ahead, 7-2.

"It feels good to get this one," Miles told the Richmond Times.
