The Richmond Black Rifles, despite a fine performance by Saint Louis pitcher Lloyd Lee, grabbed a 3-2 win at Ballpark of Saint Louis. Lee allowed 3 runs over 9 innings. The winner was Warner Alexander, who threw 96 pitches over 7 innings. The left-hander was charged with 2 runs on 6 hits. Bobby Gay collected save number 2.

A defensive lapse proved costly in the contest. In the top of the eighth, with the game tied, James Ross was at the plate when Richmond scored 1 on an error. The miscue enabled the Black Rifles to go in front, 3-2.

"We'll take some time to unwind," said Ross, "and then get after it again."

The loss makes Saint Louis 3-2.
