Miami Stymied by New York, 2-1
|
New York Yankees starter Willie Mendez hurled his team past the Miami Marlins, 2-1. Steve Blackard, summoned from the bullpen, notched his 5th save. The win has New York at 10-3.
Jim Menezes drew 1 walk for New York. The 28-year old first baseman had a key at-bat in the bottom of the sixth. With two out and the bases loaded, he broke a 1-1 tie with a run-scoring walk off Jose Castro. It was his 8th walk of the season.
"Willie pitched his heart out," said New York manager George C.
