Down to Defeat Goes Minnesota, 5-4
|
The St. Louis Cardinals picked up a win at Busch Stadium, knocking off the Minnesota Twins, 5-4. Starting pitcher Dan Weirich was a big reason why. Bobby Payne, credited with the save, is now 15 for 17 in save opportunities. St. Louis has now won 3 straight, while the Twins have lost 4 in a row.
The game was at a stalemate until pinch hitter Marcio Cappelletti came to bat in the bottom of the eighth. Facing Minnesota pitcher Jeff Clark, he hit a 2-1 slider for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting St. Louis on top, 5-4.
"Dan throwing strikes, pounding the zone, that is exactly what you want to see," said St. Louis manager Matthew Terrill.
