Cendejas, Janissaries Come Up Short in Bid for Road Win; Vikings Take 1-0 Series Lead
|
The Iceland Vikings slipped past the Istanbul Janissaries by the score of 3-2 at Skol Island in the first game of the Wildcard Series. Vikings had to overcome a strong outing from Janissaries starting left-hander Victor Cendejas, who threw 6.0 innings of 3-hit ball. With a 1-0 lead in the best-of-3 series, the Vikings will have two chances to close out the Janissaries.
The clutch at-bat came in the bottom of the 18th inning, when Iceland third baseman Danny Cruz, facing Omar Gallardo, had a run-scoring sacrifice fly. It gave the Vikings the 3-2 win.
"To become 'battle-tested,'" said Cruz, "you need to compete in this kind of contest."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Constantinople in Istanbul.
