Tourists Throttle Braves, 5-0
|
The Asheville Tourists handed the Rome Braves a 5-0 defeat at State Mutual Stadium. Catcher Shamar Malveaux starred for Asheville. He threw 6.1 innings of shutout ball. Malveaux got the win, improving to 2-1. He gave up 3 hits and walked 2 over 6.1 innings. He allowed no runs. The Tourists, now 26-11, know that wins in May count the same as wins in September.
Gabe Swift had a big 2-run home run for the Tourists in the top of the fourth inning. With Asheville leading 1-0 and a runner on 2nd, he got a fastball from 25-year old right-handed pitcher Elmer Winman and swatted a home run to right-center. It was his 12th home run of the season, and more importantly, it put the Tourists ahead, 3-0.
"At the end of the day, it's always about your starting pitcher," said Asheville skipper Nate Manning.
