The Oakland Athletics could not turn a fine performance from second baseman Phil Garner into a win. Instead, the Texas Rangers prevailed, 6-4. Garner went 3 for 3 with 3 singles and a walk. He scored 2 runs. Paul Thormodsgard snagged the win in relief. He goes to 1-0 on the season. Matt Keough suffered the loss. George Frazier locked down his 28th save.

Texas took a 5-4 lead on Roy Smalley's 16th double of the season. The run-scoring double, which Smalley hit in the top of the eighth, left Oakland pitcher Matt Keough visibly frustrated.

Texas manager Chris Sleeper commended his team for "banging out a nice win."

At 73-79, the Rangers find themselves in third place in the American League West Division.
