Philadelphia starter Clarke Schmidt pitched well against the Washington Nationals at Citizens Bank Park. The right-hander led his team to a win, 4-3, in 10 innings. Adbert Alzolay picked up the win in relief. His record improves to 1-1. Jose Ferrer suffered the loss. Philadelphia, at 77-68, is 3½ games up in the National League East Division.

A crucial at-bat came with a runner on 1st and one out in the bottom of the seventh inning. That's when designated hitter Nick Castellanos, who finished 4th in the NL in batting average with .309 in 2021, hit a 2-run home run. The Phillies went on to win.

"This kind of game is tough on the heart," said winning manager Mike Colangelo.
