Columbus beat Newcastle at Ricardo Lopez Field, eking out a 5-4 win. The win was due in large part to first baseman Matt Philpott. He went 3-3 with a home run and a double. He drove in 2 runs and scored once. Rich Vázquez picked up the win, improving his season record to 11-5. He struck out 6 in 8 innings. Earning his 32nd save for Columbus was Yosai Kato.

The Red Birds got a big hit from second baseman Jesús Hurtado. In the bottom of the fifth, Hurtado pounded a solo home run to right. His 15th home run of the season put the Red Birds ahead, 5-1.

"Honestly, I'm not frustrated," said Newcastle manager Paul Collins. "The effort was great."

The win gives Columbus a season record of 60-35.
