Red Birds Absorb 3-1 Home Loss
|
The Columbus Red Birds could not turn a fine performance from pitcher Dennis Balch into a win. Instead, the Motown Hitmakers prevailed, 3-1. Balch threw 5.0 innings of 4-hit ball. Pete Hoover picked up the win in relief. His record improves to 3-3. Bill McRuer suffered the loss. Newton Abraham, credited with the save, is now 3 for 5 in save opportunities.
The Hitmakers got a big at-bat from center fielder Jesús Flores. For the game, Flores was 1 for 4 with a home run. In the top of the sixth, with the bases empty, he stroked a solo home run. His 8th home run of the season gave Motown a 2-1 lead.
Flores called the win "a lesson in teamwork."
The victory gives Motown a record of 50-39.
