With 5-1 Win, Red Birds Go to 42-23
|
Columbus Red Birds starter Fernando Bernal was in the groove. He led his team to a win over the Reykjavik Phoenix, 5-1. Bernal picked up the win for Columbus, going 7.1 innings. He gave up 1 run on 4 hits. He now sports a record of 6-2. By defeating Reykjavik, the first-place Red Birds improved to 42-23.
Don Sloan had a big 2-run double for the Red Birds in the bottom of the fifth inning. With Columbus leading 1-0 and the bases loaded, he got a cutter from Emery Dunn, who leads the TTWB in innings pitched with 94.1, and swatted a double to center. It was his 5th double of the season, and more importantly, it put the Red Birds ahead, 3-0.
"Main thing is I want the team to win," Bernal told a reporter after the game. "Just have to go out there, take care of my job, and give my team a chance to win."
