Phillies Hang 7-2 Loss on Giants
|
The Philadelphia Phillies earned a win at Citizens Bank Park, stopping the San Francisco Giants, 7-2. Starting pitcher Jim Abbott played a big role in his team's success. Abbott, the winner, moves to 7-9. He threw 6.2 innings of 4-hit ball, while fanning 8 and giving up 1 walk. At 80-68, the Phillies claim third place in the National League East Division.
Chad Schmelzer had a big 2-run triple for the Phillies in the bottom of the second inning. With Philadelphia leading 1-0 and runners on 1st and 2nd, he got a cutter from Tauren Shera and swatted a triple to right. It was his 2nd triple of the season, and more importantly, it put the Phillies ahead, 3-0.
Said losing manager Giants GM: "It's very easy to sit in an ivory tower and critique the pitching, but the bottom line is we need to score runs."
