Chicago designated hitter Pete Woodberry had a terrific game, but it still wasn't enough to get his team a win. Woodberry went 2-4 with 2 home runs, even as Cincinnati beat the Cubs, 6-5. Zegeye Ngumi converted his 11th save in 15 tries. The win gives Cincinnati a season record of 68-68.

Had Doug Rucker not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and a runner on 2nd, Rucker hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 6-5, in favor of the Reds.

"Say want you want about this team, they play nine innings hard," said Cincinnati manager Max Gruber.
