Cubs Spill Reds, 8-5
|
The Chicago Cubs defeated the Cincinnati Reds, 8-5, at Great American Ball Park. Chicago was led by 26-year old center fielder Tomas Mendoza, who was 1-2 with a home run and a walk. He drove in 4 runs and scored once. Franklin Lantigua got the win, improving to 3-3. He pitched 5 innings, giving up 4 hits and 3 runs, while striking out 4 and walking 1. Chicago is now 45-38, while Cincinnati is 30-52.
Chicago used a clutch hit from Steve Poe to snatch the win. The first baseman belted a 2-run home run in the top of the seventh inning to put the Cubs ahead, 8-5. It was his only hit, but it was huge.
"I'm not out there for personal accomplishments," Mendoza told a Chicago Times reporter after the game. "I'm out there to help the team win, and that's what we did today."
