Phillies Stun Cardinals, 6-4
|
Philadelphia and St. Louis got after it at Busch Stadium.
The Philadelphia Phillies racked up a win at Busch Stadium, bumping off the St. Louis Cardinals, 6-4. Pete Tippins, who started for Philadelphia, pitched effectively for his team. Chris Drake, now 1-4, picked up the win in relief. He allowed no runs on 1 hit in 1.1 innings. Ruben Peterson earned the save, his 11th in 13 tries.
Philadelphia used the timely hitting of Chad Kelley to seize the win. The designated hitter stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the eighth inning to put the Phillies on top, 5-4. It was his only hit in 3 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.
"If we play like this, we can win a lot of games," Tippins told the Philadelphia Observer.
The 6th-place Phillies improved to 35-42.
