Phillies Best Nationals in Pitching Duel
|
In a low-scoring affair between the Philadelphia Phillies and the Washington Nationals, pitcher Jim Abbott was the difference between victory and defeat. The Philadelphia left-hander earned accolades for his stellar performance in the 2-0 Phillies win. Philadelphia is now 36-27, while Washington is 33-31.
Dave Montano had a big solo home run for the Phillies in the bottom of the third inning. With Philadelphia leading 1-0 and the bases empty, he sized up a curveball from Phil Sacco, who finished 3rd in the NL in innings pitched with 208.1 in 2036, and punished it. The result was his 20th home run of the season, which put the Phillies on top, 2-0.
"It's about putting our team in the best position to win ballgames," said Abbott.
