Great Day for Merino -- 5 Hits Sunday, August 23rd, 2026 The Virginia Black Bears stopped the Washington Nationals by a score of 8-3 at Nationals Park today, with the lion's share of the credit going to second baseman Eddie Merino. The 23-year-old had a career day, collecting 5 hits. "Every batter wants to have a quality at-bat every time he steps up to the plate," Merino said later. "He wants to hit the ball hard." Merino did just that in his 5 at-bats, much to the chagrin of the Nationals. "Not much that I can say," offered Washington manager Juan Ornales. "He just hammered the heck out of us." Eddie Merino singled in the 2nd, singled in the 4th, singled in the 6th, tripled in the 8th and hit an RBI single in the 9th. This season Merino has no home runs and a .321 batting average.
