Montero Socks It to Spikes, Cracks 5 Hits
5 hits in a game has always been a big milestone in baseball -- 5 hits in a game gets a player's name in the record book, win or lose. Dan Montero got his name recorded today, but the State College Spikes picked up the win at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium, topping the Tri-City ValleyCats, 9-7.

"He bushwhacked us," said winning manager Bobby Spencer. "We were lucky to come out ahead."

Montero, who is tied for 4th in the NYP in home runs with 11, spoke to reporters in the clubhouse following the game, saying his nerves only set in once he was on the cusp of the milestone.

"I got too much adrenaline going when I realized that this could be a once-in-a-lifetime day," the right fielder said. "I think the coaches could tell I was going to be ready to swing at anything close. That's why my third base coach told me to calm down and wait for a good pitch. That got me back on track."

Dan Montero singled in the 2nd, singled in the 4th, hit a two-run home run off Declan Uribe in the 5th, singled in the 7th and doubled in the 9th.

At the moment, Montero is batting .269 with 11 home runs and 24 RBIs. He has played in 44 games and scored 17 times.
