Spikes Slip Past Tri-City, 3-2
|
The exploits of right fielder Walker Stevens, who is tied for 5th in the NYP in doubles with 11, helped the State College Spikes defeat the Tri-City ValleyCats, 3-2. Stevens went 2-4 with a home run. Manuel Chaves, 2-0, earned the win in relief. He allowed 1 run on 2 hits in 2.2 innings. State College now has a record of 28-19 with the win.
The game was at a stalemate until left fielder Garey McClendon came to bat in the bottom of the eighth. Facing Tri-City pitcher Jayson Bail, he hit a 1-2 fastball for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting State College on top, 2-1.
"It was a solid team effort and we'll try to keep this momentum going," Stevens told reporters after the game.
