Black Bears Pick Up 5-2 Win Against Batavia
|
Conditions were not ideal but West Virginia and Batavia were able to put their game in the books.
In the 5-2 West Virginia win over Batavia, the impact of Hamish Jenkins was substantial. Jenkins was 2-4 with a home run. Elwood Meadows, now 1-0, was credited with the win in 3.2 innings of relief. He allowed no runs on 1 hit, while striking out 4 and walking 1. Allen Riggle got the save, the 5th for him this season.
Brandon Escobedo had a big bases-clearing triple for the Black Bears in the top of the third inning. With West Virginia leading 1-0 and the bases loaded, he got a fastball from 21-year old right-handed pitcher Rory Shape and swatted a triple to right-center. It was his 1st triple of the season, and more importantly, it put the Black Bears ahead, 4-0.
"I thought we played a nice game," Jenkins told the West Virginia Daily News. "Good pitching, timely hitting, it was all there."
The defeat makes Batavia 20-5.
