Mavericks Get Past Santa Cruz, 6-5
Santa Cruz got a big-time effort from pitcher Bill Gary, but it wasn't enough to keep the High Desert Mavericks from winning the game, 6-5. Gary threw 7.1 innings of 4-hit ball for the losing team. The winner in relief was Wilson Goins. He is now 2-0. The right-hander allowed no runs on 1 hit in 1.1 innings. The defeat makes Santa Cruz 76-55.

The decisive blow was delivered by Benito Pérez in the bottom of the ninth when he hit a bases-clearing double off 24-year old left-handed pitcher Jim Strausbaugh to win the game for High Desert. The home crowd went nuts.

"I just try to go out and give it 100 percent every game," Pérez told a local reporter after the game. "That's my mantra, and like today, it will pay off more often than not."
