San Jose Giants manager Leon Becerra knew it was a gamble to give the start to a rookie. It was a good gamble to take.

Pitching in front of a hostile crowd, 24-year-old right-hander Tully Zach silenced the host Modesto Nuts at John Thurman Field today. The Giants shut out the Nuts by a final score of 4-0, to give the Giants a 1-0 advantage in the best-of-7 Divisional Series.

Zach earned the win, going 7 strong innings for San Jose. The native of Brooklyn, New York, allowed just 2 hits, while striking out 7. Modesto hitters did next to nothing against the right-hander.

"Bottom line," said Modesto skipper George French, "we didn't play well enough to win."

The next game is set to be played tomorrow at John Thurman Field in Modesto.
