Tucson Sidewinders manager Spike Peck knew it was a gamble to give the start to a rookie. It was a good gamble to take.
Pitching in front of a hostile crowd, 22-year-old right-hander Maxwell Rinehart silenced the host New Orleans Baby Cakes at Zephyr Field. The Sidewinders shut out the Baby Cakes by a final score of 1-0, to give the Sidewinders a 1-0 advantage in the best-of-7 Divisional Series.
Rinehart, who was born in Batesburg-Leesville, South Carolina, threw 93 pitches over 8 innings, while allowing no runs.
Baby Cakes manager Bobby Gomez did not take questions after the game, telling assembled reporters that he would hold a press conference "if and when we win the AAA Championship Series."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Zephyr Field in New Orleans.
