Road Win Lifts Martinez to 2-1 Lead in WCS
|
Their bats were silent and Martinez had a rookie on the mound. No problem.
On a day when the Clippers struggled to string together much offense, the club got a big boost from 22-year-old starter Henry Scurlock. The left-hander quieted the Stockton Ports at Banner Island Ballpark to help Martinez take the 2-1 decision and seize a 2-1 advantage in the best-of-7 Wild Card Series.
Martinez used the hitting of Leonardo Jimez to pick up the win. The left fielder clubbed a 2-run home run in the top of the first inning to put the Clippers on top, 2-0. For the game, Jimez had 1 home run and 1 single in 4 at-bats.
"Tough loss," said Stockton manager Tristan Batista. "This one will sting for a while."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Banner Island Ballpark in Stockton.
