Gulls Beat Nuts, 2-1, in Series Opener

The rookie looked like he belonged out there.
The Ventura Gulls sent 22-year-old left-hander Ethan Truan to the mound for a high-pressure playoff start and he repaid their confidence, quieting the Modesto Nuts on a day where the Gulls struggled to produce runs of their own. In the end, Ventura cobbled together enough to take the 2-1 decision. The win gave Ventura a 1-0 lead in the best-of-7 Wild Card Series.
Had Violante Almonte not delivered a key base hit in the top of the seventh, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 2nd and 3rd, Almonte hit a 2-run single. That made the score 2-0, in favor of the Gulls.
"A confident pitcher is a dangerous thing," said Ventura manager Jason Norton. "That's what Ethan is right now."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at John Thurman Field in Modesto.
