Lynchburg had no answer for 21-year old right-handed pitcher Walter Newell. The Carolina Mudcats starter stymied Hillcats hitters, helping the Mudcats cruise to victory, 9-0. Newell picked up the win for Carolina, going 7 innings. He gave up no runs on 3 hits. He now sports a record of 6-10. The 6th-place Mudcats have a record of 61-62.
Cotton Ponce had a big 3-run home run for the Mudcats in the bottom of the fifth inning. With Carolina leading 3-0 and runners on 2nd and 3rd, he sized up a fastball from 24-year old right-handed pitcher David Sudham and punished it.
