Salem and Virginia Beach duked it out and the Red Sox came out victorious.

The Salem Red Sox beat the Virginia Beach Mariners, 9-7, with major props going to left fielder Joaquin Scharpf. On the day, Scharpf belted 2 home runs. He drove in 4 runs and scored twice for the Red Sox. The save was Shelby Möller's, his 9th.

Yimi Cotto hit a 2-run double off David Ouellette in the bottom of the eighth, which put the Red Sox in front, 9-7. In addition to the double, Cotto had 1 single, while going 2 for 4.

"It wasn't our best performance," said Scharpf, "but a win in this league is nothing to sniff at."

Salem is now 51-64, Virginia Beach 68-47.
