Pirates End Yates's Streak
Tuesday, September 14th , 1965
Binghamton center fielder Al Yates came into today's game against the Batavia Pirates on a hot streak. He left on a cold one.
The Pirates did their jobs well, beating the Binghamton Triplets 16-3 and holding Yates hitless to snap his 23-game hitting streak. The 20-year-old center fielder had a few words to say after finishing 0-for-3, telling reporters only that he "came up short."
"What Al did was exciting and quite an achievement," said Triplets manager Bill Adkison. "It's tough enough to get one hit in this league, much less go 23 games in a row. I'm even more proud of the way he handled the press coverage. He never let the frenzy get to him or affect his play."
Yates is hitting .374 this year with 9 home runs, 47 RBIs and 37 runs scored. He has 61 hits in 163 at-bats, 22 walks and a .456 on-base percentage. Yates has played in 42 games.
