O'Connor Stars for Pirates in 8-2 Win
|
Riding the 4-hit performance of the 23-year old center fielder William O'Connor, the Pittsburgh Pirates stopped the New York Mets, 8-2. Ernest Milius earned the win to go to 14-10. He allowed 2 runs on 3 hits, with 6 walks and 8 strikeouts in 7.1 innings of work. The Pirates, at 86-65, lead by one game in their division.
Johnny Callison dealt the Mets a blow in the bottom of the second. Batting with a runner on 1st and Pittsburgh leading 1-0, Callison, who led the NL in doubles with 41 in 1965, hit a full count fastball for a run-scoring double.
"Good baseball players make you a smarter manager," said Pittsburgh manager JD Doss.
