Guardians Turn Away Orioles, 4-3
|
The Cleveland Guardians topped the Baltimore Orioles, 4-3, in AL action at Memorial Stadium 1959-1975. The standout performance belonged to Cleveland pitcher and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, native Sam McDowell. The winning pitcher was McDowell, now 7-7. He tossed 5 innings of 1-hit ball, while walking 3 and fanning 2. The third-place Guardians have won 4 in a row.
Graig Nettles, the 30-year old shortstop , had a direct impact on the outcome. Nettles contributed a run-scoring sacrifice fly in the top of the first inning to put Cleveland up, 1-0.
"Good pitching, clutch hitting," said Cleveland skipper Bobby McGrew. "I can't complain."
