Larry Gowell pitched well, but his team, the New York Mets, still dropped a 1-0 decision to the Montreal Expos at Olympic Stadium 1977-2004. Al Hrabosky got the win, improving to 21-4. He held the Mets to no runs on 5 hits over 7 innings, while striking out 4 and walking 1. Montreal improves to 102-39 with the win. They lead their division by 23 games.
Montreal second baseman Robin Yount contributed a timely at-bat in the bottom of the third. With two down, he hit a curveball into right-center field for a run-scoring single. It was his 161st hit of the season and put the Expos ahead, 1-0.
"If you pitch well, you give yourself some opportunities," said Montreal manager Bryan Gryka.
